Timber Futures Winner Spotlight: Digital Kintsugi by Emirhan Avcı
At Creathlon Competitions, we believe design competitions are an opportunity to explore ideas that challenge convention and help shape a better future. Through Timber Futures, we invited architects, designers, and creative thinkers from around the world to reimagine the potential of timber as a catalyst for sustainable, innovative, and meaningful architecture.
The response exceeded our expectations. From ambitious urban interventions to intimate material explorations, participants demonstrated remarkable creativity in addressing the future of timber design.
Following a rigorous evaluation process by our international jury, one project emerged as a standout for its powerful narrative, thoughtful use of material, and compelling architectural vision: Digital Kintsugi by Emirhan Avcı.
An Interior Architect and Game Artist based in Istanbul, Emirhan Avcı holds a Master's degree from Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, where his research explored the intersection of artificial intelligence, fictional spaces, artistic visualization, and digital aesthetics. His winning proposal reimagines timber not simply as a construction material, but as a medium for storytelling, resilience, and ecological reflection.

A Manifesto for Repaired Architecture
At the heart of Digital Kintsugi is a simple but powerful idea: architecture should not hide damage—it should learn from it.
Inspired by the Japanese art of repairing broken ceramics with gold, Emirhan's proposal responds to a growing ecological reality. As forests around the world face increasing destruction from wildfires, the project asks how architecture might transform loss into opportunity.
"Digital Kintsugi is a speculative pavilion designed as a manifesto for Repaired Architecture. In an era where global forest fires are increasingly devastating our ecosystems, this project uses the Japanese art of Kintsugi—mending cracks with gold—to tell a story of survival."

Rather than relying on a dramatic architectural form, the project deliberately adopts a restrained rectangular geometry.
"An extravagant shape would have competed with the narrative; instead, this silent container allows the scars of the charred timber to remain the focal point."

Timber as Storytelling
For many projects, timber serves primarily as a structural or aesthetic material. Digital Kintsugi takes a different approach.
Instead of focusing solely on shaping new timber into a complex architectural object, the project explores the narrative potential embedded within the material itself.
"Timber is ubiquitous in our lives, but we often treat it as a static commodity. For this project, I chose not to focus on merely shaping new timber into a complex form; instead, I focused on the storytelling potential of the material."

The proposal uses CLT as its primary structural system, creating the impression of a building that has been damaged, repaired, and ultimately strengthened through recovery.
"Using CLT as the structural backbone allowed the building to feel like a living organism that has been healed and reinforced after trauma."

Bridging Ancient Craft and Future Technologies
One of the qualities that impressed the jury was the project's ability to combine traditional techniques with contemporary timber technologies.
The design merges Shou Sugi Ban charred timber with engineered CLT systems, while luminous bio-resin veins create the project's distinctive golden repair lines.
"The project bridges ancient artisanal techniques with modern engineering by combining Shou Sugi Ban with precision-engineered CLT systems. Instead of focusing on timber as a static material, I treated it as a living organism capable of healing."

This shift in thinking transforms sustainability from a process of replacement into a process of care, adaptation, and maintenance.
An Architecture of Reflection
Beyond its environmental message, Digital Kintsugi creates a highly atmospheric experience.
Visitors move through dark timber spaces interrupted by moments of warm golden light, creating a contrast between damage and renewal.
"Visitors are enveloped by the haptic, dark texture of charred wood, which is dramatically punctured by golden light emanating from the structural cracks. This creates a spiritual, contemplative environment that encourages people to reflect on the beauty of impermanence and the strength found in repaired things."

A Vision for the Future of Timber
The project ultimately asks an important question about the future of sustainable construction.
As forests continue to face increasing pressure from climate change and logging, how can architecture become more regenerative rather than extractive?
"The future of timber architecture cannot rely solely on harvesting new trees; it must focus on reclaiming what is arguably lost. By rehabilitating trees damaged in fires, we reduce the pressure on living forests and turn a symbol of ecological grief into a sustainable structural resource."

Looking Ahead
Digital Kintsugi is a powerful reminder of why ideas competitions matter.
Beyond the images, drawings, and presentations, competitions create a space where designers can explore urgent questions, test new perspectives, and challenge established ways of thinking. They provide an opportunity to develop ideas that might not emerge within the constraints of everyday practice, while connecting creative voices from around the world through a shared ambition to shape a better future.
